South America is a continent located entirely in the Western Hemisphere and mostly in the Southern Hemisphere, with a small portion in the Northern Hemisphere at its northern tip. It can also be considered the southern subregion of a larger continent called America. The continent is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the north and east, while North America and the Caribbean Sea lie to the northwest.
Twelve sovereign states, two dependent territories, and one internal territory are part of South America. The sovereign states include Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela. The dependent territories are the Falkland Islands and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, while French Guiana is the internal territory. Additionally, some other territories, such as the ABC islands of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Ascension Island (a dependency of Saint Helena, Ascension, and Tristan da Cunha, a British Overseas Territory), Bouvet Island (a dependency of Norway), Panama, and Trinidad and Tobago, may also be considered as parts of South America.
South America has a total area of 17,840,000 square kilometers (6,890,000 sq mi) and a population of over 434 million as of 2021. It is the fourth largest continent by area (after Asia, Africa, and North America) and the fifth largest by population (after Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America). Brazil is the most populous South American country, with more than half of the continent’s population, followed by Colombia, Argentina, Venezuela, and Peru. Brazil is also the first regional power in the continent, generating half of the continent’s GDP in recent decades.
Most of the population lives near the continent’s western or eastern coasts, while the interior and the far south are sparsely populated. The geography of western South America is dominated by the Andes mountains, while the eastern part contains both highland regions and vast lowlands where rivers such as the Amazon, Orinoco, and Paraná flow. Most of the continent lies in the tropics, except for a large part of the Southern Cone located in the middle latitudes.
South America experiences all of the world’s major climate zones. In temperate latitudes, winters and summers are milder than in North America, due to the equatorial zone occupying the most extensive part of the continent. This region has more areas of equatorial plains than any other region, giving the Southern Cone more oceanic influence, which moderates year-round temperatures.
South America relies less on the export of manufactured goods and natural resources than the world average, with merchandise exports from the continent accounting for 16% of GDP on an exchange rate basis, compared to 25% for the world as a whole. Brazil is the largest exporter of merchandise, followed by Venezuela, Chile, and Argentina. Since 1930, the continent has experienced remarkable growth and diversification in most economic sectors. While most agricultural and livestock products are consumed locally, their export is essential for the balance of trade in most countries.
